Spanish navigator. He traveled to Mexico in 1555 and moved to Peru in 1557, where he gained a deep knowledge of the native culture, but was subjected to three inquisitions during his stay in America. At the request of Viceroy Francisco de Toledo of Peru, he wrote Historia de los Incas (History of the Incas) to justify the Spanish conquest of Peru. In 1579, he traveled to the Strait of Magellan to block the route of the English pirate F. Drake. Sarmiento, who advocated colonization of the strait, returned to his home country in 1580 and arrived at the strait in 1584 with a fleet, building two cities there, but ultimately failed.

スペイン人航海者。1555年メキシコに渡り，57年にペルーへ移って，原住民文化を深く知るようになったが，アメリカ滞在中3回異端審問を受けた。ペルー副王フランシスコ･デ･トレドの要請を受け，スペイン人のペルー征服を正当化する目的で《インカ史Historia de los Incas》を著した。79年イギリスの海賊F.ドレークの進路を断つべくマゼラン海峡へ赴いた。同海峡の植民地化を主張するサルミエントは，80年に本国に戻り，艦隊を率いて84年に海峡に到着して2都市を建設したが，結局挫折。
