Located in the Bronx in the north of New York City, it is a park area adjacent to the zoo. Opened in 1891, it occupies a vast area of approximately 100 hectares, where 15,000 species of plants are cultivated, and the attached herbarium (plant specimen museum) houses approximately 4 million specimens. The main subject of research is New World plants, and it is also the base for editing the Neotropical Flora, but recently it has also been focusing on research into Asian plants. As it is a New York City public institution, the research staff has personnel and research exchanges with the City University of New York.
