Modibo Keita, who led the Sudanese Union and promoted the independence movement, became the first president of the Republic of Mali when it was established in 1960. He formed a radical group in Africa with Nkrumah of Ghana and Sekou Touré of Guinea, and took a pro-socialist foreign policy.
