An American daily newspaper known as a high-quality paper. It was planned by Henry J. Raymond, a reporter for the New York Tribune, along with two bankers, George Jones and Edward B. Westley, and was first published on September 18, 1851 under the title The New York Daily Times (it changed its name to its current name in 1857). It had a capital of $100,000, four pages, and a low price of one cent. It aimed to be a "refined" newspaper rather than a sensational penny paper, and started out as a paper in opposition to the radical tone of H. Greeley's New York Tribune.

アメリカの日刊紙。高級紙として知られる。《ニューヨーク･トリビューン》紙の記者だったレーモンドHenry J.Raymondが2人の銀行家ジョーンズGeorge Jones，ウェスリーEdward B.Westleyと計画，1851年9月18日に《ニューヨーク･デーリー･タイムズ》の題号で創刊した(1857年，現行の題号に改称)。資本金10万ドル，4ページ建てで定価も安く1セントであった。センセーショナルなペニー･ペーパーではなく〈品のいい〉新聞をめざし，H.グリーリーの《ニューヨーク･トリビューン》の急進的な論調に反対する新聞として出発した。
