Mendes - Mandes (English spelling) Catulle Mendès

French poet, novelist, and playwright. Born in Bordeaux. In 1861, he founded the magazine Revue fantaisiste. In 1866, together with Louis-Xavier Richard (1843-1911), he published Modern Poetry of Poetry, and became a central figure in the formation of the High Poetry movement. His style of poetry is characterized by Banville-esque rhymes, diction, and a good degree of lyricism. His collections of poems include Philomela (1864). He also wrote historical documents such as The Legend of Modern Poetry of Poetry (1884), The House of an Old Woman (1894), and Trends in French Poetry 1867-1900 (1903). He is also remembered as one of Mallarmé's important correspondents.

フランスの詩人、小説家、劇作家。ボルドーに生まれる。1861年『幻想派評論』Revue fantaisiste誌創刊。66年リカールLouis-Xavier Richard（1843―1911）とともに『現代高踏詩集』を刊行し、高踏派形成の中心となった。詩風はバンビル風の押韻の妙、語術とほどよい叙情性によって特徴づけられる。詩集に『フィロメラ』（1864）など。また『現代高踏詩集の伝説』（1884）、『老女の館(やかた)』（1894）、『1867年から1900年のフランス詩の動向』（1903）など詩史的資料も書き残している。さらにマラルメの重要な文通相手の1人としても記憶される。
