A Japanese stringed instrument. There are the Yakumokin and the derived Oriental two-stringed koto. The Yakumokin is also called the Izumokin or Tamakin, and is said to have been invented by Nakayama Kotono. The koto performer Kuzuhara Koto also invented a two-stringed koto that he named the "bamboo koto." Kabuki musician Tosha Ashifune improved the Yakumokin to invent the Oriental two-stringed koto, which could be played with the Nagauta shamisen and its accompaniment. Both the Yakumokin and Oriental two-stringed koto were very popular until the mid-Meiji period, but today there are only a limited number of players, except for the Yakumokin, which is used as religious music by the Omoto sect.
