Newsweek

Newsweek
A weekly news magazine based in New York, USA. In 1933, Thomas J. C. Martin, the editor of foreign news at Time (founded in 1923), launched the magazine under the name News-Week, with a similar format to Time. In 1937, the hyphen was dropped from the name to become Newsweek. In the early days, the magazine explained the news in analytical bylined boxed articles, and it was called one of the three major news weekly magazines in the United States, along with Time and U.S. News and World Report. In 1961, it was acquired by Philip L. Graham, publisher of The Washington Post, and management was revamped. It introduced a politically liberal perspective, expanded its coverage of popular culture, and, combined with its narrative writing style, attracted many readers. In 2010, it was acquired by American entrepreneur Sidney Harman. Like Time, Newsweek has somewhat retreated from hard-hitting articles by the 21st century, focusing on articles for the general public, such as stories about celebrities, but it has maintained a strong reputation for the accuracy and sharpness of its articles. At its peak, it sold over 4 million copies worldwide, and in addition to an international edition in English, it also launched foreign language editions such as Japanese (launched in 1986), Korean, and Spanish. In early 2011, it merged with the company that runs the news site The Daily Beast, launched by British editor Tina Brown, and Brown became editor-in-chief. On December 31, 2012, it moved completely to an online edition and ceased publication of its print edition. However, in 2013, it was sold to the emerging media company IBT Media, and the print edition was revived in March 2014.
