A Rinzai sect monk from the Muromachi period. Born into the Goto clan, a vassal of the Akamatsu clan in Mimasaka Province (Okayama Prefecture). He was the head of the Inryoken temple complex and was in charge of the Gozan temples. He became a disciple of Kikei Shinzui, who wielded power in the Shogunate's politics, and inherited his teachings (Ichizan school). During the Onin War (1467), he fled to Omi with Kikei. He succeeded Masuno Sojin as the Inryo priest, and for about 10 years he was in charge of the affairs of the Gozan temple complex and was highly trusted by Ashikaga Yoshimasa. He also studied poetry and prose under Zuikei Shuho and others, and was known for his calligraphy. He was appointed as a zakunin (chief priest) at Shozan Saizenji, Jishetsu Shofukuji, and Tenryu-ji. His diary makes up the majority of the Inryoken Diary, and is an important historical source for the history of medieval Zen Buddhism as well as the political history of the Muromachi period.
