English actor, theatre manager, and playwright. Born in Hereford, west of England. He went to London with his teacher Samuel Johnson and worked in commerce, but then turned his attention to the stage, where he rose to stardom in 1741 with his role as Richard III. Small in stature and expressive, he was naturally suited to comedy, but also showed a talent for tragedies such as King Lear and Macbeth, becoming one of the greatest actors of the 18th century. He also managed Drury Lane Theatre from an early stage, and built it into one of the leading theatres in Europe at the time. As a playwright, he wrote several original plays and adaptations of Shakespeare's works, including the famous opera The Secret Marriage (1766, co-written with G. Colman, the Elder (1732-1794) with Cimarosa. [Nakano Satoshi] [References] | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
