Oonyu Island

An island located in the back of Saiki Bay in the southeastern part of Oita Prefecture. It belongs to Saiki City. Its area is 5.65 square kilometers, with a highest point of 194 meters. It has little flat land, but the coastline is rich in inlets and bays. In 1957 (Showa 32), the Remote Islands Development Act came into effect. It is about 2 kilometers from Saiki Port, and has eight bays, including Ishima, where ferries pass. Its main industries are mandarin orange cultivation, fishing for mackerel, horse mackerel, and sardines, and yellowtail farming. On the east coast is Shirahama Beach, and on the northeast coast is Kami no I, where water was obtained by digging a bow into the sand during Emperor Jimmu's eastern expedition. Population 1,022 (2009).

大分県南東部、佐伯湾(さいきわん)奥にある島。佐伯市に属する。面積5.65平方キロメートル、最高点194メートル。平地に乏しく、海岸線は出入りに富む。1957年（昭和32）離島振興法適用。佐伯港から約2キロメートル、フェリーが通う石間(いしま)ほか8浦がある。ミカン栽培、サバ、アジ、イワシの漁獲、ハマチの養殖が主産業。東岸に白浜海水浴場、北東岸に、神武(じんむ)天皇東征のおり、弓で砂を掘り、水を得たという「神の井」がある。人口1022（2009）。
