An island located in the back of Saiki Bay in the southeastern part of Oita Prefecture. It belongs to Saiki City. Its area is 5.65 square kilometers, with a highest point of 194 meters. It has little flat land, but the coastline is rich in inlets and bays. In 1957 (Showa 32), the Remote Islands Development Act came into effect. It is about 2 kilometers from Saiki Port, and has eight bays, including Ishima, where ferries pass. Its main industries are mandarin orange cultivation, fishing for mackerel, horse mackerel, and sardines, and yellowtail farming. On the east coast is Shirahama Beach, and on the northeast coast is Kami no I, where water was obtained by digging a bow into the sand during Emperor Jimmu's eastern expedition.
