Oyabe [city] - Oyabe

Japanese: 小矢部[市] - おやべ
Oyabe [city] - Oyabe
A city in the western part of Toyama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1962. It occupies the western part of the Tonami Plain upstream of the Oyabe River. Isurugi, in the center, developed as a post town on the Hokuriku Kaido and a river port on the Oyabe River. The Ainokaze Toyama Railway and the Hokuriku Expressway run through the city, and in 1992 the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway branched off from the city near the border with Tonami City, and was opened to the neighboring town of Fukumitsu (now Nanto City) to the south. The city produces mainly rice, but also engages in forestry, spinning, rubber, chemicals, papermaking, and ceramics. Tsuzawa in the south was the rice shipping port for the Tonami Plain. It is home to Kurikara Pass. It is also known as the "town of fairy tale architecture," with many public facilities such as schools and community centers modeled after famous buildings around the world, such as Nikolai Cathedral and Tokyo Station. The area is 134.07 km 2 . 32,067 people (2010).
