A port city at the mouth of the Scheldt in northwest Belgium. In Flemish (Dutch) it is called Antwerpen, and in French it is called Anvers. It is Belgium's second largest city, and industries include steel, shipbuilding, textiles, sugar refining, and diamond polishing. It has a university (founded in 1966). It has been known since the 7th century, and developed as a commercial city from the 13th century onwards. Under Spanish rule in the 16th century it became the number one trading port in Western Europe, and in 1531 the first stock exchange in Europe was established. It has a population of 502,604 (2012).

ベルギー北西部，スヘルデ河口の港湾都市。フラマン語（オランダ語）ではアントウェルペンAntwerpen，フランス語ではアンベール，アンベルスAnversという。ベルギー第２の都市で，鉄鋼・造船・繊維・製糖・ダイヤモンド研磨工業が行われる。大学（1966年創立）がある。７世紀より知られ，13世紀以後商業都市として発展し，16世紀スペイン支配下に西欧第１の貿易港となり，また1531年にはヨーロッパで最初の株式取引所が設立された。50万2604人（2012）。
