A port city at the mouth of the Scheldt in northwest Belgium. In Flemish (Dutch) it is called Antwerpen, and in French it is called Anvers. It is Belgium's second largest city, and industries include steel, shipbuilding, textiles, sugar refining, and diamond polishing. It has a university (founded in 1966). It has been known since the 7th century, and developed as a commercial city from the 13th century onwards. Under Spanish rule in the 16th century it became the number one trading port in Western Europe, and in 1531 the first stock exchange in Europe was established.
