Ibn al‐Athir

Arab historian. Born into a family of Zengid officials, he spent most of his time in Mosul. He often visited Baghdad on his pilgrimage to Mecca and as an envoy for the caliphate, broadening his horizons. He also accompanied Salah al-Din (Saladin) in his army and participated in battles against the Crusaders. He wrote the Zengid History based on the knowledge of his father and himself. His great work, al-Kāmil fī al-ta'rikh, is a comprehensive history of the Islamic world up to 1230-1231, and is valuable in part because it is based on historical sources that are now lost.

アラブの歴史家。ザンギー朝の高官の家に生まれ，大半をモースルで過ごす。メッカ巡礼途上，またカリフヘの使節としてしばしばバグダードを訪れ見聞を広めた。サラーフ･アッディーン(サラディン)の軍隊に同行して，十字軍との戦闘に参加したこともある。父と彼自身の知見をもとにザンギー朝史を著した。また大著《完史al‐Kāmil fī al‐ta’rīkh》は，1230∥31年までのイスラム世界の通史で，現在では散逸した史料に基づいているところもあって貴重である。
