1160‐1234 Arab historian. Born into a family of Zengid officials, he spent most of his time in Mosul. He often visited Baghdad on his pilgrimage to Mecca and as an envoy for the caliphate, broadening his horizons. He also accompanied Salah al-Din (Saladin) in his army and participated in battles against the Crusaders. He wrote the Zengid History based on the knowledge of his father and himself. His great work, al-Kāmil fī al-ta'rikh, is a comprehensive history of the Islamic world up to 1230-1231, and is valuable in part because it is based on historical sources that are now lost.
