Shochu Sato
Year of death: July 23, 1882 (Meiji 15)
Year of birth: April 4, 1827 (April 29, 1827)
A doctor from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. The second head of Juntendo (Juntendo University). His name is officially read as "Takanaka." He was the second son of Yamaguchi Hosen, a doctor in Omigawa Domain, Shimousa Province (Chiba Prefecture). At the age of 16, he went to Edo to study Confucianism under Terakado Seiken, and studied medicine under Ando Bunsaku, but at Ando's recommendation, he switched to studying under Sato Taizen. He quickly distinguished himself, and in 1859 he became Taizen's adopted eldest son and was appointed doctor for the Sakura Domain. He learned about Pompe from Taizen's biological son, Matsumoto Ryojun (Jun), and traveled to Nagasaki to study in 1860. He studied under Pompe and returned to the domain in 1862. He immediately carried out medical reforms in the Sakura Domain, and opened the Sakura Temporary Sanatorium. However, in 1869, while still in the middle of his career, he was asked by the government to become a doctor at Daigaku Toko in order to reform medical education, and he moved to Tokyo. At the same time, he was appointed as a senior doctor (later to become a junior doctor when the position was changed), but in 1872, following the arrival of German teachers such as Muller in Japan, he resigned with some volunteers and opened a private hospital called Hakuaisha in Nihonbashi. The following year, he resigned from all government positions and opened Tokyo Juntendo Hospital in Neribei-cho, Shitaya. In 1875, he moved to Yushima (where Juntendo University Hospital is now located) and completed construction of Juntendo Hospital, which became the first private general hospital. However, he fell ill shortly after the hospital opened, and called back his adopted son, Sato Susumu, who was studying in Germany, to take over the hospital. <Works> "Surgeons" and "Strohmeyer's Treatise on Cannon Injury" <References> "History of Juntendo" Vol. 1
