An isolated Chilean island in the southeast Pacific Ocean, located at 27 degrees south latitude and 109 degrees west longitude. It was named after the Dutchman Roggeveen, who arrived there on Easter Day in 1722. It is also called Rapa Nui. It is a volcanic island with no trees and is used as sheep pasture. It is known for its remains, such as giant stone statues (moai) and stone monuments of indigenous peoples, who may be Polynesian or Melanesian, as well as undeciphered writings, and it has been designated a national park to preserve the remains. In 1995, restoration work on the moai statues was carried out with the cooperation of the Japanese private sector. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
