Haishi-so (Haishi-so) - Hayashinosho

Japanese:
Haishi-so (Haishi-so) - Hayashinosho
A manor established in Haishi-go, Kii-gun, Yamashiro Province (Wamyo-sho). It is also called Haishi-no-sho. It was originally written as Haishi, but after it was donated to the nearby To-ji Temple (Kyoogokoku-ji Temple), Haishi was mainly used. The manor was scattered throughout the northern part of Kii-gun, from present-day Minami-ku to Fushimi-ku in Kyoto City, intertwined with other estates, and was cultivated with land provided by the surrounding villages. It is considered a typical Kinai-style manor. Around the middle of the 12th century, Fujiwara Akiyori, Minister of Civil Affairs, donated 11 cho of paddy fields in Kii-gun that he had inherited from his father to Kozen-in Temple (located in Kii-gun and a branch of Anrakuju-in Temple), which he had built himself (the donation was made by the head family, but the lord's position was retained). In 1198, the fields totaled 11 cho 4 tan, and the fixed fields were 9 cho 7 tan, with an area of 48 koku 6 to. Later, Anrakuju-in (territory), including Kozen-in (territory), was handed down to Emperor Go-Uda as the territory of Hachijo-in. The position of lord was passed down to Akiyori's descendants, but by the end of the 13th century, it gradually left the family's hands. In 1313, Haishi-sho was donated to To-ji by Emperor Go-Uda, but at that time the total area of fields, including Hondada and Hiyoshida (Hiyoshi Juzenshimiya Kanda), was about 20 cho. However, To-ji was only able to control about half of the land, excluding Hiyoshida, which was about 10 cho, and there was no significant change after that. To-ji had already appointed the position of shikkoshi (lower rank) of Haishi-sho the year before the official donation, and strongly promoted its control as a subordinate manor, but from the mid-15th century onwards, its control gradually weakened due to rebellions, obstructions, and disputes, and the state of more than half of the annual tax not being paid continued for a long time. However, since it was subordinate to the Emperor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi confirmed its status in 1585, and the fief continued.
