Also called staphylococcus. A gram-positive, spherical bacterium with a diameter of 0.8 to 1.0 μm, it is easily cultured on standard media. It is a non-motile, non-spore-forming facultative anaerobic bacterium that divides and grows indiscriminately in spatial directions on solid media, forming a bunch-of-grapes arrangement, hence the name. However, it can also be arranged in a diplococcal or short chain form. While the weakly pathogenic Staphylococcus epidermidis is normally present on human skin and mucous membranes, the highly pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus is a typical cause of suppuration along with streptococci, and can also cause food poisoning.
