It depicts rice cultivation and silk weaving. It was first presented to Emperor Gaozong by a tower in the Southern Song Dynasty in China, and has the meaning of a warning to rulers to know the hardships of farmers, and of observing agriculture. The famous example is Peiwenzai Plowing and Weaving, which was commissioned by Jiao Bingzhen for the Qing Emperor Kangxi. In Japan, it has also been painted since the Muromachi period, and there are many others, including the sliding door paintings at Daisen-in Temple by Kano Noshin.
