Daie Soko - Daie Soko

A Zen monk of the Rinzai sect in the Song dynasty in China. He was the master of Kanhua Zen. He was given the titles Butsujitsu Daishi and Daie Zenshi, and his posthumous title was Fukaku Zenshi. He was called Myoki. His common surname was Xi. He was from Xuanzhou (Anhui Province). He became a monk at the age of 16, and studied under Dongshan Doubi and Rokutan Bunjun (1061-1115), and attained enlightenment under Engoku Kokugon at Tennei-ji Temple in Tokyo (Tonkin) and received the Dharma transmission. At the age of 49, he lived in Jingshan, but later became embroiled in political strife and was exiled to Hengyang (Hunan Province) and then Meizhou (Guangdong Province). He reinstated as a monk at the age of 69, lived in Ashoka Mountain, and then returned to Jingshan. He emphasized enlightenment through koan, and marked the beginning of Zen thought. He passed away on August 10, 1241. The 30 volumes of "Sayings" were incorporated into the Tripitaka.

中国、宋(そう)代の臨済(りんざい)宗の禅僧。看話禅(かんなぜん)の大成者。賜号は仏日大師、大慧禅師、諡号(しごう)は普覚(ふかく)禅師。妙喜(みょうき)と号する。俗姓は奚(けい)氏。宣州(安徽(あんき)省)の人。16歳で出家し、洞山道微(どうび)、泐潭文準(ろくたんぶんじゅん)(1061―1115)に参じ、東京(トンキン)の天寧寺の圜悟克勤(えんごこくごん)の下で悟りを開き嗣法(しほう)した。49歳で径山(きんざん)に住し、のち政争に巻き込まれて、衡陽(湖南省)、ついで梅州(広東(カントン)省)に流罪となる。69歳で復僧し、阿育王山に住したのち、径山に再住した。公案による悟(ご)を強調し、禅思想に期を画した。隆興元年8月10日示寂。『語録』30巻は大蔵経に編入される。
