Mizuko - Mizuko

Japanese:
Mizuko - Mizuko

A baby who has not been born for very long. It is called an infant or an ubuko. In general, Mizuko refers to a baby who dies shortly after birth. In Kanagawa Prefecture, when a Mizuko dies, it is said that if a proper funeral is not held, the baby will be bullied in the afterlife, so it is buried only by the family, but if it dies shortly after birth, it is buried with a doll. In the Kamiiwa area of Sanogawa, Midori Ward, Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, babies are said to be abandoned Buddhas, so a bamboo sieve is pierced over the buried baby. In the case of Mizuko, if you put ink on your hand, it will be reborn. If a baby is born with a name written on it, you must rub it with the soil of the grave to remove it. Therefore, it is said that you should not write the name on your hand. In Iki Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, a Mizuko is a baby that dies within the same year after birth. Mizuko do not have a proper funeral, so they are not counted as Buddhas. It is not good to do so. It is believed that if left in this state, the deity will eventually be reborn.

It is also said that the souls of unborn babies are looked after by Jizo, so Jizo statues of unborn babies are enshrined in temples and memorial services are held for the unborn babies.
