Fibrinolytic enzyme activator. A proteolytic enzyme discovered in human urine in 1947, it activates plasminogen in plasma and promotes the formation of plasmin, and is therefore used to treat various types of thrombosis and embolism, as well as in combination with anticancer drugs such as mitomycin C. This is because plasmin dissolves fibrin produced during blood clotting and increases the permeability of cell membranes, dissolving thrombi and embolisms and dissolving fibrin surrounding cancer cells, enhancing the penetration of anticancer drugs into cancer cells. In addition to preparations extracted and purified from human urine, there are also preparations made from human kidney tissue cultures, and these are used only as infusion drugs. Usually, one bottle contains 6,000 units, 24,000 units, or 60,000 units. [Fumiji Koho] [Reference] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
