...It was passed down to the surviving members of the "group of leaders," such as Sudharman (the first head of the group), and during the Mauryan period, the group expanded further under the patronage of King Chandragupta and Prime Minister Kautilya. In examining the history of the Jain group after that, the split into the White Robe Sect (Śvetāmbara) and the Naked Sect (Digambara), and the relationship between the two sects, are important. The seeds of the split between the two sects can be seen as early as the 3rd century BCE, but the clear split occurred in the 1st century CE.
