Mizuhiki - Mizuhiki

A perennial plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). It grows 50-80 cm tall, with swollen nodes. The leaves are short-stalked, alternate, broadly elliptical, 5-15 cm long, abruptly pointed at the tip, and wedge-shaped at the base. The leaves are thin, hairy on both sides, and often have black spots on the surface. From August to October, it produces long, slender flower spikes, with sparsely blooming small flowers. It has four red perianths. It has five stamens and one pistil. The achene is ovate, compressed, 2.5 mm long, wrapped in persistent perianth, and brown and shiny. The style of the fruit does not fall off, and the tip is hook-shaped. It commonly grows in mountains and fields, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, the Himalayas, and Indochina. The name comes from the fact that the flower spike is long and shaped like a mizuhiki. The white-flowered variety is called Ginmizuhiki (silver-water-stringed string), and the thick, glossy, hairless leaves are called Shinmizuhiki (P. neofiliformis (Nakai) Ohki). They are distributed from Honshu to Kyushu and Chugoku.

Incidentally, although it has the name Mizuhiki, the goldenrod is a perennial plant of the Rosaceae family and is a completely different species from this plant.

タデ科（APG分類：タデ科）の多年草。高さ50～80センチメートル、節は膨れる。葉は短柄があって互生し、広楕円(こうだえん)形で長さ5～15センチメートル、先端は急にとがり、基部はくさび形。葉質は薄く、両面に粗毛があり、表面はしばしば黒斑(こくはん)がある。8～10月、細長い花穂をつくり、まばらに小花を開く。花被(かひ)は4枚で赤色。雄しべは5本、雌しべは1本。痩果(そうか)は卵状扁圧(へんあつ)形で長さ2.5ミリメートル、宿存する花被に包まれ、褐色で光沢がある。果実には花柱が落ちずに残り、先は鉤(かぎ)形になる。山野に普通に生え、北海道から九州、および朝鮮半島、中国、ヒマラヤ、インドシナに分布する。名は、花穂が長く、水引状になることによる。白色花のものをギンミズヒキ（銀水引）、葉の質が厚くつやがあり、無毛のものをシンミズヒキP. neofiliformis (Nakai) Ohkiといい、本州から九州、および中国に分布する。

　なお、ミズヒキの名がついているキンミズヒキはバラ科の多年草で、本種とはまったくの別種である。
