Alsace and Lorraine are regions in northeastern France. As a result of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, France ceded Alsace and northern Lorraine, except for Belfort, to Germany. The region was militarily important as a contact point between Germany and France, and was rich in iron ore, coal, and potash, making it a constant battleground between Germany and France. Before November 1, 1872, 158,000 Alsace-Lorraine natives had chosen French nationality and fled to France or Algeria. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
