NHK Taiga Drama - NHK Taiga Drama

[Transition to TV]
In 1963, when Toei, the "kingdom of period dramas," switched to the yakuza film route, the first of NHK TV's taiga dramas, "A Flowering Life," became popular, and Fuji TV's "The Three Samurai" series became a hit. This was followed by NHK's taiga dramas, "Akō Roshi" in 1964, "The Taikōki" in 1965, and "Minamoto no Yoshitsune" in 1966, transferring the romanticism of period dramas from film to television. It is truly symbolic that "The Three Samurai," influenced by Kurosawa Akira's "Yojimbo" and "Tsubaki Sanjūrō," also transferred the appeal of flashy fight scenes from film to television. From this time on, period dramas seemed to have become something to be enjoyed on television rather than seen in the movies, and from the late 1960s to the 1970s, television period dramas flourished, with all the popular material from period dramas of the past, such as Kurama Tengu, Miyamoto Musashi, Shinsengumi, Chushingura, Zenigata Heiji, Nemuri Kyoshiro, Mito Komon, Hatamoto Taikutsu Otoko, Ooka Echizen no Kami, and Toyama Kinshiro, being made into television series, and many period drama directors moved their activities to television, with period drama stars being born from television.
