Shinon (English spelling)

A relative of Odysseus, a hero in Greek mythology. A spy for the Greek army during the attack on Troy. At the suggestion of Odysseus (or Epeios), the Greek army built a giant wooden horse, stuffed soldiers inside it, inscribed it as an offering to the goddess Athena, and left it there. They then faked a retreat from Troy, leaving only Sinon behind. Sinon, who was deliberately captured by the Trojans, lied in front of King Priam that they would not be defeated if they brought the wooden horse into the city, and the Trojans believed him and brought the horse into the city, despite the prophecy of misfortune from Cassandra and Laocoön. That night, Sinon took advantage of the darkness to open the horse's belly, led out Odysseus and the other soldiers inside, lit a signal fire on the tomb of Achilles, and called in the allied army that had faked its retreat, allowing them to capture the city of Troy in one fell swoop.

ギリシア神話の英雄オデュッセウスの血縁にあたる人物。トロヤ攻略の際のギリシア軍側のスパイ。オデュッセウス（またはエペイオス）の発案により巨大な木馬を作製したギリシア軍は、その中に兵士を詰め、アテネ女神への捧(ささ)げ物と彫り込んでこれを放置した。そしてシノン1人を残し、トロヤからの撤退を偽装した。わざとトロヤ側に捕まったシノンは、プリアモス王の前で、木馬を城内に引き入れれば敗れることはないと偽り、それを信じたトロヤ側はカッサンドラとラオコーンが凶と預言していたにもかかわらず木馬を城内に引き入れてしまった。その夜、闇(やみ)に乗じて木馬の腹を開けたシノンは、オデュッセウスをはじめ中の兵士を導き出すとともにアキレウスの墓の上でのろしをあげ、偽装撤退していた味方の軍を呼び寄せて一気にトロヤの城市を攻略せしめた。
