A French daily newspaper first published on August 29, 1789, in the midst of the French Revolution. It is also known simply as Débat (Dispute). It started out as a newspaper reporting on debates in the National Constitutional Assembly, but after it was bought by the Bertin brothers in 1799, it became a major paper with a strong focus on both politics and literature. Napoleon, who disliked the word Débat, renamed it Journal de l'Empire (Imperial Newspaper) on July 16, 1805, and provided full financial support to make it a government newspaper, but after Napoleon's downfall, it reverted to its original title.
