Founded in 1888, it is a pioneer of the modern petroleum industry. In 1941, it merged with Kokura Oil. In 1942, due to wartime controls, it became a specialist in refining. In 1951, it partnered with Caltex, an American company, and contributed Yokohama and Kudamatsu refineries (Yamaguchi Prefecture) in kind to the joint venture Nippon Petroleum Refining. It also has a refinery in Niigata. It is the top company in Japan in terms of petroleum product sales. In April 1999, it merged with Mitsubishi Oil and changed its name to Nippon Oil Mitsubishi (and changed its name to Nippon Oil in June 2002). It is now the largest petroleum refiner and retailer in Japan.
