Born in Memmingen, he pursued a career in commerce, contrary to the expectations of those around him who wanted him to become a priest. However, he was not always successful, and after a turbulent career that included serving as a mercenary, his talents were recognized by the Augsburg city council, who appointed him to serve as an attendant on a foreign mission and as a secretary.
