It belongs to the Furyu dance genre of folk performing arts, and is danced to kouta (folk lyrical songs) that were popular from the late Muromachi period to the mid-Edo period. Furyu dances that incorporate kouta cover a wide range, including taiko drum dances, Amagoi dances, Nembutsu dances, and Bon dances, but kouta dances focus exclusively on kouta, and the dance form is mainly hand dances and fan dances, in an attempt to better express the lyrical mood of the songs through dance. They are widely scattered throughout the country, but the following three are representative. (1) Ayako Mai (Onadani, Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture) A dance performed by 2-3 girls. Of the 11 traditional dances (currently 7), including the Obaragi Dance, Sakai Dance, Hitachi Dance, Hikage Dance, Inakakakudari Dance, Matsumushi Dance, Inaba Dance, Koi no Odori, Shiokumi Dance, Nishikigi Dance, and Kokiriko Dance, 10 of them, excluding the Matsumushi Dance, match the songs of female kabuki dances. (2) Kashima Dance of Ogouchi (Okutama Town, Nishitama District, Tokyo): A dance performed by six young men dressed as women. There are also 11 pieces handed down, but three pieces, namely Ogura (Obaraki Dance), Hamagasaki (Shiokumi Dance), and Kokiriko, match Ayako Dance. (3) Shinohara Dance (Shinohara, Oto-cho, Gojo City, Nara Prefecture) This is a group dance performed by women holding fans and men holding shime drums. There are 36 pieces, several of which are shared with Ayako-mai and Kashima-odori. None of the pieces include shamisen accompaniment, and they retain the form of early female kabuki dance before shamisen accompaniment. The dance basically consists of three stages: the opening, the main song, and the opening, and this form can also be seen in Okinawa's classical dance, especially female dance. It consists of a small song dance performed by young women, a hayashi dance performed by men, and kyogen. There are 11 types of small song dance, including the Kogiriko Dance, Hitachi Dance, and Obaragi Dance, and they are important in understanding early Kabuki dance. They are open to the public on the second Sunday of September every year. The photo shows the Obaragi Dance.
