A corporation established under the Japanese Red Cross Society Act. The Japanese Red Cross Society aims to achieve the humanitarian mission that is the ideal of the Red Cross, in accordance with the spirit of the Red Cross Conventions and the principles resolved at International Red Cross Conferences. The Red Cross has seven basic principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. Red Cross organizations around the world act in accordance with these principles, providing relief to victims of war and conflict, as well as providing relief to disaster victims, and carrying out medical, health, and social welfare projects. When the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011, the Japanese Red Cross Society carried out medical relief activities, such as setting up relief stations at evacuation centers and dispatching medical staff to major medical facilities in the affected areas, as well as transporting disaster relief supplies, collecting donations, and providing psychological care to victims. The Japanese Red Cross Society is headquartered in Tokyo, and operates through branches, hospitals, maternity hospitals, blood centers, social welfare facilities and other facilities in all 47 prefectures across the country. As of April 2011, there are 104 hospitals, 26 nursing training facilities (universities and vocational schools), 212 blood service facilities, and 28 social welfare facilities across the country, with a total of 59,000 employees. The symbol of the Red Cross is a red cross on a white background, and is a mark to protect people injured in wars and conflicts, as well as military medical units and Red Cross medical personnel and facilities that provide medical care to those people. International and domestic laws strictly stipulate that hospitals and medical personnel that display the Red Cross mark in conflict areas must never be attacked.
