Jimyoin family

Japanese: 持明院家 - じみょういんけ

A branch of the Northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. Fujiwara no Michinaga's great-grandson Motoyori (son of Yorimu), built a Buddhist altar on his estate and named it Jimyoin, but his son Michimoto renamed it Anrakukoin, and Jimyoin became the family name. Towards the end of the Muromachi period, Motoharu took up the calligraphy of the Sesonji school and founded the Jimyoin school. In the Edo period, he became the head of the calligraphy family with a stipend of 200 koku. After the Meiji Restoration, he was made a viscount. The name Jimyoin line came from the fact that the imperial line of Emperor Gofukakusa made Jimyoin Sento (the palace of the retired emperor).

藤原氏北家の一流。藤原道長の曾孫基頼 (頼宗の子) が邸内に持仏堂を建てて持明院と名づけたが，その子通基がこれを安楽光院と改めて，持明院を家名としたことに始る。室町時代末期に，基春が世尊寺流の書道を継ぎ，持明院流を興した。江戸時代には家禄 200石で書道の宗家となる。明治維新後，子爵。なお後深草天皇の皇統が持明院を仙洞 (上皇の御所) としたことから，持明院統の名称が生じた。
