Japanese Record of Going to Paradise - Nihon Oujou Gokurakuki

A one-volume biography of those who went to the afterlife in the mid-Heian period. Written by Yoshishige Yasutane. The first draft was completed between 983 (Eikan 1) and 986 (Kanwa 2). Later, Prince Kaneakira was commissioned to add more, but when the prince passed away in 987 (Eien 1), the author took up his pen again and completed the work. This is the first biography of those who went to the afterlife in Japan, and it contains brief biographies of 45 people who went to the afterlife (people who went to the Pure Land of Amida Buddha), including Prince Shotoku, Gyoki, and Ennin. The Pure Land thought in this work is based on the belief in the unity of the Lotus Sutra and Nembutsu, and the idea of Raigo is also clearly seen. It can be seen as a reflection of the Tendai Pure Land Buddhism of the time's idea of going to the afterlife through various practices. It had a great influence on subsequent Ojo-den works. It is also known as "Nihon Ojo-den" and "Kei-shi Nihon Ojo-den."
