This is the only collection of poems by Miyazawa Kenji published during his lifetime. It was published in April 1924 (Taisho 13). In addition to the important prologue that begins with "The phenomenon known as myself is a single blue light from a hypothetical organic alternating current lamp," which reveals the secrets of his "mental sketch" technique, the book contains 64 poems, from "Refractive Index" (January 6, 1922) to "Winter and the Galactic Station" (December 10, 1923), in order of the date of conception or first draft. The original idiom, vivid poetry, and cosmic sensibility of the poems only attracted the attention of a few discerning critics and poets when they were first published, but after the poet's death, they gradually came to be recognized as a monumental work of modern poetry. The series starting with "The Morning of Eternal Farewell," which is based on the death of his younger sister, is well known.
