A region in central Belgium. In French it is called Brabant. Its capital is Brussels. It was formerly a province called the Duchy of Brabant, but was divided into North and South in 1993 when the constitution was amended to federalize Belgium. It is a fertile agricultural region, and the textile industry has been thriving there since ancient times. Since the 12th century, the Duchy of Brabant has been larger than the current provinces of North and South, and the North has been part of the Netherlands since 1830.
