Nipponites - Japanese

A genus of the Ammonoidea (Ammonite) of the Cephalopoda class of the Mollusca phylum. It was described in 1904 (Meiji 37) by Yabe Hisakatsu from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido. It belongs to the so-called heteromorph ammonites, and is classified in the Nostoceratidae family of the Ankyloceras suborder. Four species have been described to date, all of which have a unique shell shape resembling a coiled snake.

Initially, some scholars thought it was a deformity, but this has been refuted because the shells of all individuals grow by periodically making U-turns on a spherical surface, and other shell characteristics are the same as those of normal-coil species. A theoretical morphological study using computers has revealed that Nipponites formed its unique shell shape while adjusting its living position in the water by regularly changing the angle between the horizontal plane and the direction of shell growth within a certain range. It is found in the Upper Cretaceous deposits in the seas of Hokkaido, Sakhalin, Kamchatka, the Pacific coast of North America, and slightly offshore from Madagascar.
