A tool for grinding herbal medicines into powder. It was invented in the Tang dynasty in China, and its Chinese name is yakuten. It is unknown when it was introduced to Japan, but it is known that tea grinders for grinding tea were already in use in the 11th century (Heian period). Yagyo was probably introduced later than this. Yagyo consists of a mortar that is long and narrow, boat-shaped with a V-shaped cross section, and a grinding tool that looks like a flattened abacus bead with an axle passing through it. They come in various sizes, but the mortar is generally about 30 cm long and the grinding tool is about 20 cm in diameter. They can be made of wood, iron, or stone. When using them, you sit down and place the mortar vertically in front of your body, put the medicine in the mortar, place the grinding tool on it, hold both axes in your palms, and turn the grinding tool back and forth to grind it into powder. At this time, it is easier to grind if you move either your left or right hand slightly back and forth and hold the grinding tool at a slight angle to the mortar.
