A city in the eastern part of the Harima Plain, downstream of the Kakogawa River, in southern Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The city center developed as a crossing point of the Kakogawa River on the Sanyo Expressway, and is served by the Sanyo Main Line, Kakogawa Line, and the Sanyo Electric Railway to the south. Fertilizer and woolen factories were established here in the mid-Meiji period, and since the 1960s, steel, machinery, chemical, and textile industries have been active as part of the Harima Industrial Zone. The development of transportation networks has placed the city within commuting distance of Kobe and Osaka, and the population has increased significantly. It is home to Kakurinji Temple. 兵庫県南部,加古川下流の播磨(はりま)平野東部の市。1950年市制。中心市街は山陽道の加古川の渡河点として発達,山陽本線,加古川線,南部に山陽電鉄が通じる。明治中期から肥料・毛織物工場が進出,1960年代以降は播磨工業地帯の一部として鉄鋼・機械・化学・繊維工業が活発。交通網の整備により神戸,大阪への通勤圏にはいり,人口増加が著しい。鶴林(かくりん)寺がある。138.48km2。26万6937人(2010)。
