This dictionary was published by the Society of Jesus in Japan to help Christian missionaries learn Japanese. The main volume was published in 1603 (Keicho 8), with a supplement published the following year. It contains over 30,000 words, including colloquialisms, written language, poetic language, Buddhist language, women's language, baby talk, dialects, vulgar language, and even words created within the church. Explanations are provided in Portuguese, special words are noted, important words are used with examples, and pronunciation, grammar, and the expressive value of words are also covered, with synonyms and antonyms sometimes listed. Along with the "Great Grammar of Japan" written by Rodrigues, it is indispensable not only for its value in Japanese linguistics, but also for cultural history research in general. It is currently in existence at the Bordeaux Library at Oxford University, the Evora Public Library in Portugal, the National Library of Paris, and the Convent of St. Domingo in Manila.
