A British quarterly literary critic. Founded in 1932 by FR Leavis, his wife QD Leavis, and LC Knight, the magazine was founded at Cambridge University. It sought precise and rigorous critical standards, and was founded with a sense of mission to improve the nation's culture through the act of literary criticism. Although it sometimes fell victim to self-righteousness and narrow-mindedness, its consistent approach of getting to the heart of a work through close reading of the text and praising the balance between technique and morality contributed to raising the standard of criticism in Britain.
