Azumigawa [town] - Adogawa
A former town in Takashima District, western Shiga Prefecture. Occupying the middle and lower reaches of the Azumi River which flows into Lake Biwa, the town mainly grows rice, vegetables and livestock. Local industries include fan rib manufacturing and weaving. Sweetfish fishing is also practiced. This town was the birthplace of Nakae Fujiki and the remains of a shoin study (historic site) are here. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In January 2005, it merged with Makino Town, Imazu Town, Takashima Town, Shinasahi Town and Kutsuki Village in Takashima District to become Takashima City. Area: 48.47 km2 . Population: 14,437 (2003).
