A former town in Takashima District, western Shiga Prefecture. Occupying the middle and lower reaches of the Azumi River which flows into Lake Biwa, the town mainly grows rice, vegetables and livestock. Local industries include fan rib manufacturing and weaving. Sweetfish fishing is also practiced. This town was the birthplace of Nakae Fujiki and the remains of a shoin study (historic site) are here. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In January 2005, it merged with Makino Town, Imazu Town, Takashima Town, Shinasahi Town and Kutsuki Village in Takashima District to become Takashima City. Area: 48.47 km2 . 滋賀県西部,高島郡の旧町。琵琶湖に注ぐ安曇川の中・下流域を占め,米作を中心に,野菜栽培,畜産を行う。地場産業である扇骨製造,織物業が盛ん。アユ漁も行う。中江藤樹の生地で書院跡(史跡)がある。1993年に琵琶湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年1月高島郡マキノ町,今津町,高島町,新旭町,朽木村と合併し市制,高島市となる。48.47km2。1万4437人(2003)。
