A leader in the Christian world. After studying at the Nisshinkan Domain School, he moved to Tokyo in 1870. The following year, he entered Kanagawa Shubunkan to study English. In 1873, he was baptized by SR Brown and joined the Church of Christ in Japan. He studied theology at the Tokyo Unity Theological Seminary, and in 1880 was ordained as a canon priest. In 1881, he became pastor of Kojimachi Church. In 1884, he became an associate professor at the Tokyo Unity Theological Seminary. In 1886, he became a director of Meiji Gakuin, and in 1887, he became a professor at the same university's theology department. In 1990, he studied at the Union Theological Seminary in New York, and after returning to Japan the following year, he succeeded JC Hepburn as the second president of Meiji Gakuin, a position he held for 30 years until 1921. During this time, he served as chairman of the Edinburgh International Missionary Conference, chairman of the YMCA Alliance, and chairman of the Japan Christian Convention. He began work on Bible translation early on, and made a great contribution in that area. His book, "Ibuka Kajinosuke and His Times" (3 volumes, 1969-71) has been published.

キリスト教界の指導者。藩校日新館に学んだのち,明治3 (1870) 年上京。翌年英語勉学を目的として神奈川修文館に入学。 1873年 S.R.ブラウンより受洗,日本基督公会に属す。東京一致神学校にて神学を学び,80年按手礼を受け正教師。 81年麹町教会牧師。 84年東京一致神学校助教授。 86年明治学院理事,87年同神学部教授。 90年ニューヨーク・ユニオン神学校に学び翌年帰朝後,J.C.ヘボンのあとを受け明治学院第2代総理となり,1921年まで 30年間在職。この間エディンバラ万国宣教大会議長,YMCA同盟委員長,日本基督教会大会議長などを歴任。早くから聖書翻訳の仕事を手がけ,その面での貢献が大きい。『井深梶之助とその時代』 (3巻,1969~71) が刊行されている。
