The term "new wave" is French for "new wave," and was given to the new film movement that emerged in France at the end of the 1950s. Since then, it has become synonymous with "new film" or "young film," and has become so common that it is also used to refer to innovative trends and new generations in fields other than film. [The birth of the Nouvelle Vague] The term was not originally used for films, but was the title given to a survey about the lives and opinions of young people in France conducted by Françoise Giroud (1916-) in the weekly magazine L'Express from September to December 1957. This was later compiled into a book under the title Nouvelle Vague: Portraits of French Youth. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
