〘noun〙 A school that, under the old system, taught specialized skills and knowledge about navigation and engineering to train crew members for merchant ships. The three higher mercantile marine schools in Tokyo, Kobe, and Shimizu were merged under the new education system after World War II to form two schools, Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and Kobe University of Mercantile Marine. Currently, there are five national mercantile marine colleges, including in Toyama and Hiroshima.
