Passion - Passion (English)

Music composed to the story of the Passion of Christ as told in one of the four Gospels of the New Testament. It has a long history, and it is known that the Passion of Christ was recited during Holy Week in early Christian times.

In the medieval Roman liturgy, monophonic passion music was used. The roles of Jesus, the crowd (turba), and the evangelists were assigned, and the range and speed of recitation were specified to create a dramatic effect. This became the origin of all later passion music. In the mid-15th century, passion music gradually became longer and was composed in polyphony. These polyphonic liturgical passion music are divided into responsiv and transcendental passion music. The former has a monophonic recitation by the evangelists and a polyphonic part that responds to the evangelists' direct speech, while the latter has all parts, including the evangelists, in polyphony. In the 16th century, Italian passion music began to be composed with the words of Jesus, and many responsiv and transcendental passion music was created in the 17th century. Important composers of polyphonic passion music in this period include Victoria of Spain and Lassus of Flanders.

On the other hand, Protestant works included many responsorial passions up until the 17th century, but Johann Walter's German responsorial passions were regarded as models for Protestant passions. Schütz also left behind three responsorial passions, which are masterpieces that evoke the passion of Lutheran faith.

From the mid-17th century onwards, the dramatic elements of the Baroque period were reflected in Passion music. Free expressions were inserted into the text of the Bible, and the use of recitatives and arias brought the compositional style closer to the form of the oratorio. This tendency became even stronger after the 18th century, and the Passion music in its original sense gave way to Passion oratorios with original texts. Despite this background, J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (premiered in 1723) and St. Matthew Passion (premiered in 1729) are masterpieces in the history of music, based on a biblical character and incorporating lyrical and dramatic elements, and retain the original dignity of the Passion music. In the 20th century, Kurt Thomas's St. Mark Passion (1927) and Distler's Chorale Passion (1933) aimed to revive the spirit of Schütz and Bach.

『新約聖書』の四福音書(ふくいんしょ)のいずれかに伝えられるキリスト受難の物語に作曲された音楽。その歴史は長く、すでに初期キリスト教時代には聖週間にキリスト受難が朗唱されていたことが知られている。

　中世のローマ典礼では、単旋律の受難曲が用いられた。物語に登場するイエスや群衆（トゥルバ）および福音史家の役割が分担され、劇的な効果を出すために、朗唱する音域や速度も指定された。これが後のあらゆる受難曲の起源となった。15世紀中ごろになると受難曲は徐々に長いものになるとともに、多声音楽による作曲づけがされていく。この多声音楽の典礼的受難曲は、応唱的受難曲と通作的受難曲に分けられる。前者は、単旋律の福音史家の朗唱と、じかに語りかける多声の部分が応答するもの、後者は、福音史家を含めたすべての部分が多声部で扱われているものである。16世紀イタリアではイエスのことばが作曲される受難曲も出始め、さらに17世紀にかけて応唱的受難曲が数多く生み出された。この時期の多声音楽による受難曲の重要な作曲家には、スペインのビクトリアやフランドルのラッソ（ラッスス）らがいる。

　一方プロテスタント系の作品には、17世紀に至るまで応唱的受難曲が多かったが、ヨハン・ワルターによるドイツ語の応唱的受難曲は、プロテスタント受難曲の模範と仰がれた。またシュッツは三つの応唱的受難曲を残しているが、これらはルター派信仰の情熱を秘めた名作である。

　17世紀なかば以後、バロック時代の劇的な要素が受難曲にも反映していく。聖書のテキストに自由な表現が挿入されるとともに、レチタティーボやアリアなどの使用により、作曲様式はオラトリオの形態に近づいていった。この傾向は18世紀を過ぎるとさらに強まり、本来の意味での受難曲は独自のテキストによる受難オラトリオに席を譲った。このような時代を背景にもちながらも、J・S・バッハによる『ヨハネ受難曲』（1723初演）と『マタイ受難曲』（1729初演）は、聖書的性格を根底に置き、そこに叙情的・劇的要素などを織り込んだ音楽史上の傑作で、受難曲本来の威厳をとどめている。20世紀におけるクルト・トーマスの『マルコ受難曲』（1927）やディストラーの『コラールパシオーン』（1933）は、シュッツやバッハの精神の復興を目ざした作品である。
