A village in Kiso County, in the southwestern tip of Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,127 (1995). Located at the entrance to the Kiso Valley, it borders Gifu Prefecture across the Kiso River. Cultivated land is developed along the Kiso River, and National Route 19 runs through it. Rice cultivation, livestock farming, and sericulture are carried out, and in recent years dairy farming and greenhouse horticulture have become popular. In the south is Magome, a post station on the Nakasendo road in the early modern period, which still retains traces of its former glory. It is also known as the birthplace of Shimazaki Toson, and is visited by many tourists for its Toson Memorial Museum and Eishoji Temple, the Shimazaki family temple. 長野県南西端,木曾郡の村。人口2127(1995)。木曾谷の入口に位置し,木曾川を境に岐阜県に接する。木曾川沿いに耕地が開け,国道19号線が通じる。米作,畜産,養蚕が行われ,近年は酪農や施設園芸が盛んである。南部には近世中山道の宿駅であった馬籠(まごめ)があり,往時の面影を残している。島崎藤村の出生地としても知られ,藤村記念館や島崎家の菩提寺永昌寺などがあり,訪れる観光客も多い。島崎藤村宅跡は県史跡。
