Uintatherium (English spelling)

Uintatherium (English spelling)
An extinct herbivorous mammalian order of slow-footedness that lived in North America during the Eocene epoch of the Paleogene period of the Cenozoic Era. The genus name is derived from the Winta tribe, a native Indian of Utah. It was a bizarre animal that preferred swamps and was about 2 meters tall. The strangest feature was its head, which had three pairs of low, hump-like horns, totaling six, on top of its long, thin head. Its brain was small compared to the size of its head. It had large saber-shaped canines on its upper jaw and an earlobe-like structure on its lower jaw that received the canines. Since the humps and canines were larger in males, it is said that they were secondary sexual characteristics. The tusks were similar to those of a Japanese elephant, and were probably used to jump on and stab enemies. The rest of its body shape was similar to that of modern elephants. It had short limbs and a heavy build. Judging from the shape of its molars, it is thought that it ate soft grass in swamps and marshes.
