Praise of Saint Nichiren - Nichiren Shonin Chugasan

Japanese: 日蓮聖人註画讃 - にちれんしょうにんちゅうがさん

Illustrated works of Nichiren, 5 volumes. Also known simply as "Chugasan." Compiled by Nisshun (1441-1510). Although biographical picture scrolls of high priests were produced from the Kamakura period onwards, there is no evidence that a tale of Nichiren was produced. It was not until the 15th century, when picture scrolls were on the decline, that it was produced. This is Nisshun's "Chugasan," and he wrote the text, but since there is no original, the artist and date of production are unknown. The oldest surviving copy is the one at Honkoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, produced in 1536 (Tenbun 5) by the priest Anritsu-in Nissei and the artist Kubota Tsuneyasu, and there are five other copies that are thought to have been made later.

日蓮の伝絵，5巻。単に《註画讃》ともいう。日澄(1441‐1510)撰。鎌倉時代以降高僧の伝記絵巻が制作されたが，日蓮の伝絵が制作されたあかしはなく，絵巻物が退潮する15世紀にいたり，その制作をみた。日澄の《註画讃》がそれで，日澄は註画讃(詞書)を起稿したが，絵師や制作年代については原本がないので未詳である。現存本では，1536年(天文5)勧発師安立院日政，画工窪田統泰による京都本圀（ほんこく）寺本が最古で，のちにこれを模写したと考えられるものが5本ある。
