Karl Vossler

Karl Vossler

German linguist and researcher of Romance language literature. He served as a professor at the University of Munich from 1911 onwards. He viewed language as a creative activity of the mind, and under the influence of the Italian philosopher Croce, he asserted the fundamental identity of language and art. Advocating idealism and opposing positivist linguistics, he developed a linguistics that placed literary research at its core, and left behind a vast body of writing on Italian, French and Spanish literature. His influence extends to German literary studies as well as parts of modern poetics. Two of his works on fundamental considerations have been translated by Kobayashi Hideo into the book "Language Aesthetics" (1935).
