Insectivore, Tenrecidae. The largest of the insectivores, it reaches a body length of 30-40cm. Its body is covered with hair, which is made up of thin, long hairs, normal hairs, and thick, needle-like hairs. The needle-like hairs are found on the head. The tail is vestigial. It hides in forest bushes or underground holes during the day, and is active from dusk to night. It eats underground insects, earthworms, snails, lizards, etc. It is known for having a large litter size (an average of 15-16 babies per litter). It is found only on the island of Madagascar and nearby islands, and lives in scrub forests.

食虫目テンレック科。食虫類のなかで最も大きく,体長 30~40cm。体は体毛でおおわれるが,体毛は細くて長い毛と,普通の毛と,針状の太い毛より成る。針状毛は頭部にみられる。尾は痕跡的。日中は森林内の藪の中や地中の穴などにひそみ,夕方から夜にかけて活動する。地中の昆虫類,ミミズなどのほか,カタツムリ,トカゲなどを食べる。1腹の産子数が多い (1産の平均子数は 15~16子) ことで有名である。マダガスカル島とその付近の島にのみ分布し,低木林地帯に生息する。
